Background
Alibaba Health has officially launched “Hydrogen Ion” (H⁺), an evidence-based medical AI assistant designed for clinicians and medical researchers, marking a key step in the company’s push to develop professional healthcare-focused artificial intelligence tools in China.
The product was released on January 19 after completing internal testing and has now entered real-world use. Alibaba Health described Hydrogen Ion as a “GPT for doctors,” built to deliver accurate and reliable medical information with a strong focus on reducing hallucinations, a common concern in generative AI systems used in healthcare.
According to the company, Hydrogen Ion is the first commercial application powered by its in-house medical large language model. The AI generates responses supported by authoritative medical sources, allowing users to trace information with one click and review original research materials directly. Alibaba Health said this approach aims to create one of the lowest hallucination rates in the medical AI field.
Doctors who took part in beta testing reported that the tool performed well in evidence-based question-and-answer tasks, medical evidence aggregation, and analytical summaries. They also noted strong performance in intelligent search functions for both clinical practice and academic research. The system can read and interpret medical literature in both Chinese and English, which testers said closely matches the daily workflow of Chinese physicians.
In terms of product design and function, Hydrogen Ion is similar to OpenEvidence, a widely used evidence-based medical AI platform overseas. However, industry experts say Alibaba Health’s product has clear strengths in processing Chinese medical literature and adapting to domestic clinical and diagnostic needs.
Observers note that China currently lacks specialised, evidence-driven AI tools built specifically for doctors. If Hydrogen Ion continues to work well in hospitals and research, analysts believe it could become a leading medical AI assistant in China, giving doctors a more trusted and efficient digital support tool.
