Background
A family-run healthcare equipment supplier in North East Wales has doubled its annual turnover to £4.6 million and expanded its workforce to 53 people, marking its 20th year in business with a move to a purpose-built headquarters near Wrexham.
Healthcare Matters, which supplies medical equipment and maintenance services to the NHS, private care sector and home users, relocated to Llay Industrial Estate to support the next phase of its growth.
The new site houses a professional training hub for occupational therapists, district nurses and community carers, with a digital tool for vulnerable patients living independently also in development.
Phil Spiby founded the company in 2004 after a cardiac event prompted him to pursue his business ambitions. What started as a specialist bed and mattress franchise has grown into one of North Wales’s most established healthcare equipment providers over two decades.
Adam Spiby, Managing Director of Healthcare Matters, said doubling turnover and growing the team reflects the trust placed in the business by NHS, local authority and private care partners. He credited 95 percent of the workforce, all drawn from the local community, as central to that growth.
Spiby said the new headquarters also gives the company a platform to share the Lean methodology approach that has driven its own efficiency, with plans to offer tours and workshops to other businesses across Wales.
The company received support through the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme, covering leadership development, carbon reduction planning and AI adoption.
Adam Price, Welsh Government Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, congratulated the firm and said the government wants to see more companies of this kind grow and contribute to a stronger Welsh economy.
