Background :

Moderna shares more than doubled this week, adding roughly $30 billion to the company’s market value, after promising late-stage data on a personalized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Merck drove heavy investor buying.

The therapy is central to Moderna’s push to demonstrate that its mRNA technology can succeed beyond its COVID-19 vaccine business and other infectious disease shots, as the company works to build a more durable revenue base. Moderna has recently added a flu vaccine to its lineup and is developing experimental vaccines for conditions including norovirus and Lyme disease.

Analysts said the cancer vaccine results could serve as an important catalyst for the company and help strengthen investor confidence. A global market strategist said successful trial results give investors stronger evidence that mRNA technology has a meaningful future beyond infectious disease treatment. A Boston-based investment manager said investors are also trying to estimate the potential revenue and earnings gain from the therapy, noting that an effective treatment for a common cancer could prove highly profitable.

The vaccine, known as intismeran, reduced the risk of melanoma recurrence and spread when combined with Merck’s immunotherapy drug Keytruda in a late-stage trial. A biotech index tracked on Nasdaq rose more than 4% to a fresh record high, lifted by Moderna’s rally. Shares of BioNTech jumped 20%, while Novavax rose 6%.

Moderna shares hit a two-year high, with trading volume running more than 15 times the 50-day average. Merck shares rose 10% to an all-time high. One investment firm raised its long-term sales forecast for the therapy, citing stronger commercial potential. An analyst tracking short positions noted that heavy short interest, among the highest of any large-cap stock, may be amplifying the rally as short sellers scramble to cover.
