Background
Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a new healthcare platform called Amazon Connect Health to help medical organizations reduce administrative work using artificial intelligence. The company revealed the product on Thursday as part of its effort to expand its role in the healthcare technology sector.
The platform uses AI agents to automate many routine healthcare tasks. It can schedule appointments, verify patients, handle documentation, and manage other administrative work that usually takes a lot of time for healthcare providers.
According to AWS, the new service integrates with electronic health record (EHR) systems and meets the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The platform also works with EHR providers, data integration companies, and patient engagement platforms to support healthcare workflows.
At present, Amazon Connect Health provides features such as patient verification and ambient documentation. Appointment scheduling and patient insights are currently in preview, while medical coding and other tools are expected to become available in future updates.
The service is priced at $99 per user each month and supports up to 600 patient encounters monthly. AWS said most primary care physicians typically manage around 300 patient visits a month, making the tool suitable for common clinical workloads.
The launch marks AWS’s latest move into the healthcare industry, which the company views as a major growth opportunity. In 2018, AWS introduced Amazon Comprehend Medical, a natural language processing tool designed to analyze unstructured medical data. In 2021, the company launched Amazon HealthLake to organize health data using FHIR. In 2022, AWS released HealthOmics, a platform to handle bioinformatics workflows.
Besides cloud services, Amazon has grown in healthcare through acquisitions. It bought the online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 for about $1 billion and acquired the primary care provider One Medical in 2022 for $3.9 billion.
Technology companies and startups are increasingly using artificial intelligence to reduce administrative pressure in healthcare. Firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic have also launched healthcare-focused AI tools, reflecting growing competition in the sector.
