Background-

Wexham Park Hospital in Slough has received approval to build a new cancer drug preparation centre to replace its ageing aseptic suite, which currently prepares around 750 chemotherapy doses every month.

Frimley Health NHS Trust said the existing facility and some of its equipment had become outdated and needed replacement to continue supporting local cancer treatment services. The trust had earlier secured approval in November for a larger two-storey building, but later decided not to continue with that plan because of higher costs and longer construction timelines.

The revised proposal includes a smaller one-storey building with a footprint of 331 square metres. The new unit will connect directly to the hospital and will include clean rooms, isolation rooms and office areas designed for the preparation of chemotherapy medicines and other sterile treatments.

Before construction begins, the hospital will demolish an old office building currently located on the site. Project representatives described the structure as worn out and unsuitable for long-term use.

The trust said the new aseptic suite is important for maintaining local cancer treatment production capacity and supporting healthcare services for the surrounding community. It added that the project is aimed at meeting urgent clinical care needs while improving operational efficiency at the hospital.

To reduce costs and speed up delivery, the new facility will be built off-site before being transported and installed at Wexham Park Hospital.
