Background

Apogee Therapeutics reported positive mid-stage trial results for its experimental eczema drug zumilokibart and announced a financing agreement worth up to $1.3 billion with Blackstone Life Sciences in the last week of May.

The funding deal will support late-stage development and possible commercial launch of the drug, which is being developed for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition.

In the trial involving 346 adult patients, 65.9 per cent of patients receiving the mid-dose achieved at least a 75 per cent improvement in eczema severity after 16 weeks. Among patients receiving the higher dose, 61.6 per cent achieved the same result, while only 23.4 per cent of placebo patients showed similar improvement. The drug met all primary and secondary study goals.

However, analysts noted that the higher dose performed below the mid-dose, raising concerns about dose consistency. Following the results, Apogee’s shares fell nearly 6 per cent during trading.

Chief Executive Officer Michael Henderson stated that the mid-dose clearly emerged as the preferred option for future studies. He added that the company sees strong potential for the drug to become a leading treatment choice for atopic dermatitis.

Apogee plans to move the selected mid-dose into late-stage trials in the second half of 2026. Henderson also stated that the Blackstone financing would allow the company to continue development without depending heavily on equity markets.

The agreement includes up to $800 million through a royalty arrangement and access to $500 million in senior debt. Apogee is also exploring the drug’s use in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with an asthma study planned for the first half of 2027.
